Black Friday Beats Out Small Business Saturday For Texas Retailers

Data show the shopping day after Thanksgiving doesn’t just benefit big-box stores.

Black Friday is for big-box retailers and small businesses benefit most from Small Business Saturday, right?

Wrong!

Data service company Womply looked at the credit card transactions at small businesses in Texas for all of 2017 and found Black Friday beats out the day after.

Womply’s vice president of brand and communications, Brad Plothow, said people’s shopping behavior is driven by major incentives.

“If they’re going to go out and spend money at a big-box retailer because of all these incentives to get out and shop, they tend to continue that shopping behavior throughout the day,” he said. “So that’s why you see a spillover effect into small retailers.”

Still, Texans like to shop small on Small Business Saturday.

Womply’s data show transactions on that day were up 41 percent last year compared to the average day for small businesses.

Small Business Saturday was created in 2010 and is sponsored by American Express. The purpose is to give a sales boost to small businesses, as a counterpart to big sale days such as Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
