The State of Local Restaurants - Hawaii

THE STATE OF LOCAL RESTAURANTS

Hawaii

We analyzed transactions for every day of the 2017 calendar year at 26,000 small, independent restaurants across America. The result is a comprehensive look at when restaurants earn the most money, when they seat the most guests, and which states make the most dough from patrons who #eatlocal.

What we learned about Hawaii
Hawaii, the 2nd-ranked state for local restaurant revenue, is above average in many ways. Restaurants in Hawaii follow the same sales trends as the average national restaurant, but their transaction numbers, average ticket sizes, and daily revenues are well above average.

The most interesting thing we learned about local restaurants in Hawaii is that they do markedly better on holidays and prominent days. This is especially true when it comes to family-centric holidays.

Understanding this report
To understand the average day for restaurants in America, we took a multidimensional look at their performance. We specifically looked at:

  • Transactions: How many individual payments restaurants process.
  • Ticket Size: How much patrons spend on average per transaction.
  • Daily Sales Revenue: How much revenue restaurants make per day.

Hawaii stands out in all three categories. The state’s eateries especially stand above the crowd when it comes to overall revenue.

HAWAII WEEKDAYS COMPARED TO WEEKENDS

As in most states, restaurants in Hawaii see a higher number of transactions, an increase average ticket size, and higher daily revenue on the weekend. But even their average weekday is stronger than the typical weekend for most restaurants nationally.

HAWAII’S AVERAGE WEEK

Here we see a day-by-day look at the average daily sales revenue over the course of the week for Hawaiian restaurants in comparison to the national averages. Again, restaurants in Hawaii follow the same trends.

THE AVERAGE YEAR FOR HAWAII RESTAURANTS

As we saw in the average week, restaurants in Hawaii have a pretty standard year in terms of seasonality. They follow the same general trend as national restaurants.

TOP 5 DAYS FOR HAWAII RESTAURANTS

Here are the top revenue-generating days for restaurants in Hawaii. They have the same top day as most states, Mother’s Day, but the next four are outliers. While most restaurants on the mainland experience a lull in the days before and after the holidays, 8 out of the top 12 days for Hawaiian restaurants preceded Christmas and New Year’s Day.

Methodology
Womply analyzed daily revenue for 25,893 restaurants in all 50 states and the District of Columbia for all 365 days of the 2017 calendar year. Restaurants were only qualified for the analysis if Womply had a full year of transaction history and the business recorded multiple transactions per day, on average. Category and overall state rankings are based on a composite score of each state’s transactions, average ticket sizes, and overall daily revenue.
