The State of Local Restaurants - Utah

THE STATE OF LOCAL RESTAURANTS 2018

Utah

We analyzed transactions for every day of the 2017 calendar year at 26,000 small, independent restaurants across America. The result is a comprehensive look at when restaurants earn the most money, when they seat the most guests, and which states make the most dough from patrons who #eatlocal.

What we learned about Utah
Utahns love to eat out, ranking the Beehive State No. 5 nationally for restaurant revenues. However, unlike most states, Utahns don’t eat out on Sunday. It doesn’t matter if it is one of their highest revenue generating weekends, Memorial Day and Labor Day, Utahns don’t eat out on Sunday.

This holds true for Mother’s Day, by far the highest revenue generating day for restaurants in America. Also, while the rest of the country continues to eat out during the holiday season, the closer it gets to Christmas, the less Utahns tend to eat out. See the full report and details below.

Understanding this report
To understand the average day for restaurants in America, we took a multidimensional look at their performance. We specifically looked at:

  • Transactions: How many individual payments restaurants process.
  • Ticket Size: How much patrons spend on average per transaction.
  • Daily Sales Revenue: How much revenue restaurants make per day.

THE AVERAGE DAY FOR UTAH RESTAURANTS

Utah stands out in all three categories. It especially stands above the crowd when it comes to overall revenue. The Beehive State ranks 5th nationally, coming in after the likes of California, New York, and Washington, D.C.

UTAH WEEKDAYS COMPARED TO WEEKENDS

Despite sluggish Sunday sales, Utah restaurants still see more revenue, transactions, and higher ticket averages on the weekend.

UTAH’S AVERAGE WEEK

Here we see a day-by-day look at the average daily sales revenue in Utah compared to the national averages. This is where we can see just how little Sunday contributes to weekend sales.

THE AVERAGE YEAR FOR UTAH RESTAURANTS

On a national level, monthly sales revenues only have a subtle variation from month to month. In Utah, however, we see revenues drop as we approach the end of the year. They make up for this during the summer months.

Methodology
Womply analyzed daily revenue for 25,893 restaurants in all 50 states and the District of Columbia for all 365 days of the 2017 calendar year. Restaurants were only qualified for the analysis if Womply had a full year of transaction history and the business recorded multiple transactions per day, on average. Category and overall state rankings are based on a composite score of each state’s transactions, average ticket sizes, and overall daily revenue.
