Despite living in the desert, people in New Mexico sure know how to celebrate green.

While restaurants are known to fill up on traditional holidays like Valentine’s Day or Easter, a recent study by Womply revealed that the best holiday of the year for small, local restaurants is none other than St. Patrick’s Day. The Irish holiday ranked No. 16 for revenue out of all 365 days, beating out other popular holidays and events such as Valentine’s Day, New Year’s Eve, the Super Bowl and more.

Womply is a San Francisco-based software-as-a-service company, according to its website. Wimple’s data science team observed consumer behavior by analyzing transactions at 26,000 independent restaurants throughout the country for every day of the 2017 calendar year.

In New Mexico, restaurant sales on St. Patty’s Day increased by 46 percent. The study showed that local restaurants saw more transactions – 44 instead of the usual 31. The average ticket size also increased slightly from $35 to $36.

The report concludes that people don’t necessarily spend more money on St. Patrick’s Day, but more residents do venture out of the house to eat compared to other holidays. According to Womply, Dec. 22 is the busiest day for restaurants in New Mexico.

St. Patrick’s Day is March 17.
