Oregon: #3 nationally for small business hiring intent

Highlights:

  • 2 in 5 small businesses in Oregon plan to hire this year
  • 72% are optimistic about business in 2017
  • 28% say they want to know what law will replace Obamacare before determining its impact on business

Oregon is one of the best states in the country to find a job with a small business in 2017, according to our new study. Fully 40% of small businesses in the Beaver State plan to hire new employees this year, good enough for the third-best percentage nationally.

Our national study, which polled thousands of small business owners in all 50 states, revealed what’s driving optimism, anxiety, and action for local businesses this year. In Oregon, 72% of small businesses are optimistic about prospects in 2017 (ranking #20 nationally), compared to 70% among all U.S. merchants. Oregon is also coming off a strong year for small business, with 76% satisfied with their companies’ performance in 2016.

On the political front, Oregon merchants are watching to see what law might replace the Affordable Care Act and how tax reform plays out on the national stage. In Oregon, 28% of small businesses say they can’t form an opinion about Obamacare repeal until they know what law might replace it (compared to 23% nationally), and tax reform is the top policy area affecting business that Oregonians want changed.
